The Analysts Speak - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 7:30 AM, EST
Core found an interview with two former PlayStation magazine executives. They talk a bit about the PS2.
Here’s a slice:

"Question: What are your thoughts of the PlayStation2?

Aizawa: I think the PlayStation2 looks great.

Yamamoto: Perhaps, but the software so far doesn't.

Aizawa: Well, I think it has potential. It will be capable of doing games that look like the movie 'Toy Story' in real-time.

Yamamoto: I agree, the hardware is impressive. But quality software isn't dependent upon graphics. Many developers are going for the realistic look now. Why not just buy Square games more then? Of course beautiful graphics are possible with the added power of the PlayStation2, but graphics won't make the system succeed.

Aizawa: I understand Yamamoto-san's opinion, saying the first PS2 soft's aren't impressive. Personally though, I'm a 3D fanatic, so I'm very excited with the capabilities of the PlayStation2. I think games which will optimize the power of the CPU, and games which will only be available on the PS2 are important, like Den-sen. The most important thing is the idea. New ideas for games are important for the PlayStation2, not just enhanced graphics."

Sony Eyes Networked Audiovisual Devices - Comments (2)

Straight from The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition:

"TOKYO --Sony Corp. is developing a series of audiovisual products that can be built into a network of household digital appliances to be operated via a personal digital assistant (PDA).

The envisioned products, which will all have communications functions, will be compatible with the IEEE1394, or the iLINK world standard. Sony plans to release as early as 2001 such digital products as TV, DVD devices, digital video machines, video game machines including the PlayStation2 console, set-top boxes for digital broadcasts and hard-disk devices for storing images.

The PDA can be used, for example, to access the TV on-screen menu and set video or DVD machines to record and replay TV programs. They can also take advantage of online e-commerce and music distribution services, as well as receive after-sales service over the Internet."

Artdink Talks PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:09 PM, EST
Core scored an interview with Artdink, they guys behind ATrain6.
Here’s a slice:

"What unique aspects are being added to the PlayStation2 version of A6?

Sato-san: On the original PlayStation the semitransparent functions were basic, and only allowed us to make one piece of a polygon semitransparent. On the PlayStation2 we're able to change the level of transparency. For example, we can make 1% of an image semitransparent or use a graduated system of transparency. So, therefore we can have varying levels of transparency for an object. In A6 the buildings become semitransparent as the camera goes by. This isn't being done using fogging techniques, we're actually increasing the level of transparency.

Can you explain this more, and how it's being used?

Sato-san: Okay, imagine you're looking at one polygon. Parts of the polygon will appear 50% semitransparent, while other parts will be only 15% semitransparent. We can actually change the level of transparency from pixel to pixel, or point to point.

Impressive. Some of the reflections and other graphical effects look incredible too.

Sato-san: Things like window reflections are semitransparent also. That's something totally impossible on other systems. Until now we've basically had to make a window using 1 polygon. Then we needed a vast number of polygons just to create a building. In fact, if we wanted to make some of the buildings in A6 on other systems we'd need- to use about 10,000 polygons."

"As Jackie Chan Stuntmaster prepares to land on PlayStations worldwide the team at Radical are already working away on ideas for the next Jackie Chan title. "We’re already working on a prototype for PlayStation2," revealed the spokesman.
He continued, "Some of the original game designers have been locked away for the last couple of weeks and they’re already working on it off site. I know we're looking to do something very different on the new Sony platform."

Mitsubishi &others to launch video game software venture
Posted by @ 12:55 PM, EST
Straight from the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition:

"Six companies including Mitsubishi Corp. will set up a video game software venture in February to supply software for game consoles of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Sega Enterprises Ltd. and Nintendo Co., The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Monday.

The new firm, Cavia Inc. -- which will be capitalized at 300 million yen -- will be equally owned by the six firms, which include Tokuma Shoten Publishing Co., Nippon Television Network Corp., Tohoku Shinsha Film Corp., Tokyo FM Broadcasting Co. and Amuse Capital. Hayao Nakayama, the former vice chairman of Sega, will become Cavia's president, with representational rights for the venture.

The firm will create game software based on popular animation characters owned by the founding companies, including Princess Mononoke from Studio Ghibli, which is affiliated with Tokuma Shoten. It plans to release the first product in a series of such software items at the end of next year.

The software will be supplied for use with a wide range of video game machines including the PlayStation2 console from Sony Computer Entertainment, Dreamcast from Sega and Nintendo64 from Nintendo. First-year sales are targeted at 3 billion yen."

Koei Talks PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 8:22 AM, EST
Core kicked up an interview with Keoi.
Here’s a bit:

"Question: Koei is known for their war simulations including Sangokushi. How did you come up with the idea for Kessen?

Kozutsumi-san: The idea initially came from Kessen producer Shibusawa kou. When we first received the PlayStation2 specifications he said 'We can finally make the game we've always wanted.' It's not an extension of our other war series, but a completely original concept. Kessen will take place around the same time as some of our other series, but the content and presentation will be completely original. Of course, we want fans of our other series to enjoy it as well.

Question: What aspect of Kessen would you say is it's greatest strength. In other words, what aspect of the game do you plan to market the most?

Kozutsumi-san: In terms of impact, I suppose the graphics are important. Still, drawing the most beautiful graphics isn't one of our main concerns. The concept, which is essentially a 'Sengoku-Kassen' (Japanese medieval war) is the center of the game. The music and the graphics are merely being used to convey and reinforce the concept.

Question: Impressive. Previously you've said that you expect to have approximately 200 different horses moving on screen in real-time. That would be impossible on the original PlayStation, right?

Kozutsumi-san: Right, the number of polygons is completely different depending upon the number of horses. Based on the number of polygons used in each horse, it would be impossible to have that many on screen using the original PlayStation. Actually, based on the polygon counts, I'd say the original PlayStation would be capable of maybe 2 or 3 horses. Based on the PS2 system specifications and our early demonstrations, we're estimating Kessen will be feature sequences with more than 200 onscreen at once. Of course the graphics are still in development, and we're setting our sights on the stars."

Reader Editorial - Comments (12)
Posted by @ 1:06 PM, EST
I received an editorial from a reader yesterday and decided to post it.
So from now we’ll post reader editorials here, they must be well written though….
Here’s a bit from it:

"The Dreamcast can render 3.5 to 4 million polygons per second and it has a 56 k. modem in it. However this is not the advantages that it has that matters most. It runs off of a modified version of Windows CE. This means that it will be easy to port games from the computer to the Dreamcast. The hardware is almost the same as their Naomi arcade systems, so it will be easy to port arcade games to the Dreamcast. Further more development is quick compared to the PS2."

Sony comments on PS2 online strategy - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:04 PM, EST
Found an interesting little article over at Gaming Age.
Here’s a bit:

"In response to a question on how the PS2 fits into its net business, this was Sony's answer. The PC is a general machine with a long history. PS2 is new, and PS2 is in effect, a computer. Vaio (Sony's line of PC's) is a device to connect to networks with a narrow band, while PS2 will connect with a wide band. We expect both to maintain their individual applications and distinctive uses.

What does this mean for gamers? It may mean that if you don't have a cable modem or DSL line, you are out of luck if you want to get online with a PS2. While in theory you could hook up a traditional USB dial up modem to the PS2, it does not look like Sony has any plans as of now to support such connections."

Tekken Tag Tournament preview - Comments (3)
Posted by @ 12:34 PM, EST
We added a nice Preview of Namco’s awesome looking 3D fighter, Tekken Tag Tournament.
Here’s some of it:

"The Tekken series is known for its easy move system which is good for people like me who don't play many fighting games, but I must say even I am waiting to buy this sucker. There are four main button moves: high punch, low punch, high kick, and low kick. Plus the top four buttons can be assigned different moves such as a two-button combo, sidestepping, throws and so on.

When the much-awaited Tekken Tag Tournament finally arrives on PS2, players can expect to see some of the old faces from previous games including Paul Phoenix, Yoshimitsu, Jin Kazama, Lei, etc. Plus there will be many new characters to choose from. This is definitely going to be a hot title and will be the perfect game to break-in that new PS2 controller."

Evergrace preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:29 PM, EST
The lads over at Gamespot kicked up a preview of Evergrace.
Here’s a slice:

"When you acquire weapons and armor, the graphics of the characters in the game will reflect the equipment you've gained. In the PlayStation2 version, the shield is no longer a part of the equipment list, so you must now rely more on your controls rather than just use the shield to block off enemy attacks. The game will feature a fashion critic, and you will receive discounts for buying or repairing weapons and armor if the critic gives you a good rating. Enemies may occasionally drop rare weapons and armor, adding more gameplay for hard-core players.

Already looking stunning on the visual front, Evergrace may be the "launch" RPG to watch out for. We'll give you more information about this game as we get it. Evergrace is expected for a spring 2000 release in Japan."

Namco Talks PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:28 PM, EST
Core slapped up a fat interview with Namco.
A few slices:

"Question: What was your first impression of the PlayStation2 in terms of development?

Harima/Mizushima: We thought it was truly profound hardware. Programmers will be exploited with the PlayStation2 since the system has so much potential.

Saida: I was initially shocked at the number of polygons it was capable of handling. I'm gradually beginning to realize that the PlayStation2 is a system where you can create almost anything you want. At first we approached the system with an 'uncertain of what can be done' attitude. Now that's changed to 'anything can be done on the PlayStation2.'

Question: Have you encountered any serious problems in developing for the PlayStation2 so far?

Harima/Mizushima: The experience of programming for the PlayStation2 isn't there yet. As we progress we're discussing development and programming with other PlayStation2 teams.

Saida: I think the only serious problem is the lack of time available. We want to do so much, but there just isn't enough time. In that sense, it's sad to be a game director. Fundamentally you want to complete everything in a short period of time, but you're always trying to get the best results."

PlayStation2 could drive DVD market - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 1:02 PM, EST
Found an interesting article in The Nikkei Weekly.
Here’s a slice:

"The software industry is expanding sales space and distribution systems for digital-versatile-disc (DVD) software under the key words of "March 4, 2000." That is the day when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has set for the release of the long-awaited PlayStation2 128-bit video-game console.

"We will continue to stress DVDs next year. We are hoping PlayStation2 will be the engine to drive market growth," said President Muneaki Masuda of Culture Convenience Club Co., the operator of the Tsutaya audiovisual software rental/sales chain nationwide.

The company is preparing to display 2,500 DVDs for rental and 3,000 titles for sale at its new outlet in the western Tokyo shopping district of Shibuya. The store will open Dec. 17.

Both figures will be the largest in the industry, company officials said.

PlayStation2 will be equipped with a function to play DVD video discs. With its suggested retail price at 39,800 yen, the game machine is cheaper than DVD players currently on the market.

Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi said in September, "We plan to ship 1 million units in two days from release on March 4." The debut of PlayStation2 will also likely push down the prices of existing DVD players."

We kicked up a fat Preview of Bungie’s upcoming game Halo.

"The single player mode sees players controlling a cyborg warrior in 3rd person perspective. There is an impressive list of weapons to use like pistols with laser sight, harpoons, flame-throwers, sniper rifles, gattling gun, and even SAMS (surface-to-air missiles).
Players must also drive various vehicles for land, air and water. The jeep is the primary means of transportation and it's mounted with a powerful machine gun.

Some of the missions in the game will include searching for your comrades and trying to find ways off of the planet to search and destroy missions. You get around the world in the jeep most of the time but occasionally you'll have the chance to take a tank for a spin."

"A PlayStation2 3D corridor shooter similar in style to GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64, X-Fire will make use of some nifty new PlayStation2 effects. In fact, for X-Fire, EA Square has partnered with Animation Science, a company with expertise in the TV/film 3D graphics field. So, no doubt X-Fire will be a title to keep an eye on over the next few months, as it could end up turning out to be a killer app for the PS2."

Top executives at software companies talks PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:16 PM, EST
“Onslaught” wrote down most of an article from PSM magazine and posted it at a forum. Very interesting info…
A few slices:

"Namco mentioned that PS1 and PS2 will be central to their strategy, but they'll try to bring a few games to other consoles as well. Square said, "In terms of development, it has been 100% PS and it is going to be 100% PS2 starting shortly."

Namco's comment was interesting. "Sony hasn't reached number one by focusing on the competition. It's become number one by focusing on its consumers, and I don't see Dreamcast, Dolphin or X-Box or anything else changing that. Just look at the specs Sony chose for PS2. They could have taken a short-term approach to profit and tried to make everyone buy multiple entertainment systems with separate DVD movie player and game console strategy, but they didn't. They really put the consumer first to provide the best in both technology and value by building both features into PlayStation2. It's this type of long-term customer-based strategy that has made Sony number one."

Kutaragi: It is already better. Even in terms of the number of transistors and the complexity of the control circuitry, the Emotion Engine chip that will be used in the PS2 is far superior to Intel's Pentium III.

Q: But Intel plans to keep on improving the performance of its chips in accordance with Moore's Law.

A: The fact of the matter is that the pace at which ever more integration can be carried out on microprocessors is starting to slow down. If you contrast that with the rapid speed at which game machine LSI technology is improving, then it is obvious which will become the technology driver of the future."

Big, low fat, quick update - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 6:19 PM, EST
Ok, really busy today, so I smacked together all news in one blurb and just linked to all articles with their headlines.
I will continue to be busy for the following two weeks due to finals in college:(
Also, I get tons of mails everyday, there is no way I will be able to reply to them all. And most questions are “when is the PS2 coming out?”
The answer to that question is all over our site, so before you mail, check our site and then visit the Forums and ask there. That is the best solution, since I don’t have time to answer very many mails.
Ok, here’s the mess:

SGI Japan To Spin Off Computer Graphics Division
From The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition:

"TOKYO -Computer marketing firm SGI Japan Ltd. will spin off its computer graphics division Jan. 1, creating a new operation to develop films and games using advanced digital technology, company sources said Monday. The move is designed to expand applications for SGI's computer graphics technologies.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will provide partial funding and later entrust game production and computer systems development to the new company. One project will entail creation of graphics which take full advantage of the technology inherent in PlayStation 2, a video-game console featuring image-processing power superior to that of many high-end computers.
Some 30 staff will be transferred to the new company. Sony Computer will provide 10% of its 200 million yen in capital. Employees will own about 50% of the firm and benefit if it eventually goes public.
The new company will focus on the entertainment business, while SGI Japan will continue to handle computer graphics for computer-assisted design and other commercial applications."

Dark Cloud Preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:37 PM, EST
We slapped up a Preview of the game Dark Cloud.
Here’s a snip:

"The worlds that players create can be huge! The graphics are very sharp with realistic textures abound. Everything looks true to life from old-fashioned wooden houses, trees with realistic leaves to towering church steeples. The level of depth stretches impressively far into the distance almost as far as the eye can see."

Higher PS2 sales expected at launch - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:32 PM, EST
The investment firm of Warburg Dillon Read stated a few days ago that "Originally, Sony expected to sell 1 million PS2 units during the first week of release. We now believe that Sony plans to sell 1 million units in the first day and as many as 3M PS2 units in the first week. This bodes well for MIPS. We estimate that initially MIPS will receive up to $1 in royalties per unit from PS2." While the firm of Robertson Stephens says that "we expect about 1 million to be sold on the first day and 3 million units in the first week, and the company gets roughly $0.75-1/box."

Metal Gear director’s secret PS2 game - Comments (6)
Posted by @ 5:55 PM, EST
From :

"The legendary Producer/Director of the Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima, has another PlayStation2 action game in the works
It isn’t The Matrix – this news is hotter than even that possibility. No, Kojima-san is working on a top secret action adventure for PlayStation2. Sadly that’s all there is to the story right now, but we can 100% guarantee its authenticity."

Again scored some info:

"Highly placed industry insiders in Japan are whispering that Namco’s PlayStation2 killer app Tekken Tag Tournament won’t hit the March 4 launch date. Also earmarked for delay is Koei’s feudal war-sim Kessen.
Namco offered: "We’ve certainly heard nothing to that effect. It’s very unlikely, but March is a few months off and something could change in that time. Anything could happen."

Analysts predict the games software market will see robust growth, reaching $17.2 billion by 2003, with the console market representing $12 billion"

Halo Preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:42 AM, EST
Gaming Age smacked up a preview of the game Halo. The game is coming for both the PC and the PS2.
A snip of the preview:

"One of these highly anticipated titles comes from Bungie. The title Halo is one of the most ambitious ones I have ever seen. Not only is there a lot of obvious eye candy, the gameplay promises quite a bit which could lead to the overall advancement of teamplay online.
The story for Halo is relatively simple. Once again aliens have decided we need to be wiped out, so as a natural reaction, we fight for survival. Battle will take place on rather large battlefields with many enviromental elements to deal with. Not much concrete information is really available on this title, but from screens alone, it looks like terrain will also play a large role in deciding the outcome of the battle."

Eternal Ring Screens and Info - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:39 AM, EST
PSX.IGN also scored some new pics and info on From Software’s RPG Eternal Ring.
A bit of the article:

"First announced at Sony's PlayStation2 debut in September, From Software's Eternal Ring has drawn attention from many gamers across the world. As a Japanese launch title due in March 2000, new details again have trickled out, and this time regarding the actual gameplay. Gameplay, yes!
Being a first-person perspective RPG, players will have to follow their enemies in order to attack. This same technique applies for both land and airborne enemies as well. As they fly into the air players must look up to target them. The game looks to take advantage of the system's speed and memory, so the battles will take place in realtime. If you've seen any previous From Software games of this nature (namely the King's Field series), you know they player movement is slow and gradual. We can only hope that Eternal Ring will take on a slightly faster pace."
