TGS 2001 MGS 2 new demo - Comments (2)
Posted by @ 12:19 PM, EDT
GS U.K. also reports about the new footage and usable items in the newer demo version of MGS2, i wish we got this one with Z.O.E.:

"Another of Snake's toys that we haven't witnessed before is a torch which, unsurprisingly, is used to find your way around dimly lit corridors and the like. The real-time lighting is, of course, excellent but it's the torch's effect on the gameplay that could prove to be something a bit special. We've yet to get this confirmed by Konami but it seems logical to us that if Snake's enemies are able to spot your shadow when you might think you're safely hidden round a corner, the same should be true of the light coming out of the torch. This could make for some really challenging gameplay in darkened areas, and since Hideo Kojima already has ice cubes that melt, bottles that smash and bags of flour that pour out their contents when shot in his game, it seems inconceivable that he won't have thought of this. One such area might be the dimly lit corridor that appears in this demo for the first time, although Snake has already been spotted by a group of Russians at this point meaning that his new torch has pretty much been made redundant. Snake instead opts for another toy we've not previously seen him wielding on the PS2 - a machine gun. This isn't likely to be your weapon of choice if you're in stealth mode but if you've already been spotted it's as deadly as it is noisy and could prove especially useful if things are getting a little crowded. The effect of the machine gun in the dimly lit corridor is similar to that of a strobe light, and things get even more disco-like once Snake's enemies start to return fire with machine guns of their own."

TGS 2001 Silent Hill2: first play - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:07 PM, EDT
When it looks like it couldn't get any better.TGS 2001 had the first playable version of Silent Hill 2, GS U.K. has the story:

"The gameplay has changed very little although the visuals are a world apart from those of the original (you might be hearing that line a lot in the PS2 section). At one point we were presented with an opportunity to interact with a young girl and although we weren't able to understand a single word of her Japanese, the expressions on her face spoke volumes. The quality of the in-game character visuals that we witnessed were, in fact, not far removed from those that appear in the cut-scenes of the first game. Unfortunately the level of noise on the showfloor meant that we weren't able to put Konami's claims of accurate 3D sound from only two speakers to the test but if we manage to sneak into the Makuhari Messe before opening tomorrow and turn the volume up you'll be the first to know.">

First Impression: Wacky Races - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 12:02 PM, EDT
GS U.K. has posted a preview on this upcoming Ps2 title:

"At the beginning of the game each vehicle has three abilities, which can be assigned to controller buttons and usually fire a weapon, execute a special attack or give your car a boost of speed. To use these abilities you are required to collect small Wacky discs, which pop up all over the circuit. More abilities and gadgets, each staying true to the theme of your chosen car, become available as you complete circuits of the course, and each vehicle is also graded for speed, acceleration and grip."

TGS 2001 Final GT3 version shown - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:46 AM, EDT
C&VG reported that also at TGS 2001 GT3 was shown in it's full version glory!:

"Over fifteen tracks were available to choose from, including the stunning "test" track which features a one-on-one race in a rainy, night-time city. The effect of the wet road (which fully reflected the surrounding buildings and light sources in real-time) has to be seen to be believed. Indeed, the level of realism GT3 has achieved now is so impressive that a layman could easily mistake replay footage for real cars. GT3 has come a long, long way since the ECTS demos shown last year."

TGS 2001 FFX: Play Test! - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:35 AM, EDT
for the first time at TGS 2001, the world got to see FFX in action , as well as a glimps of PS2's true graphic potential, C&VG has the story:

"The first observation to make is that Final Fantasy X is, simply, the most visually impressive videogame ever created. Big words? You bet. While the basic gameplay is unchanged, the major shift from the previous three games in the series is that all backgrounds are now rendered completely in real-time. As you walk, the camera follows you and moves around automatically to give you the best (and usually most visually striking) viewpoint. And while you don't have control of the camera as you move, this fits in rather well with the narrative feel of the series - love or loath it."

"Never ones to judge a book by it's cover, we sat down and played Bombad for over an hour. Fun we had, ahem. As expected, Bombad is your standard kart racing fare set in the Star Wars universe. This is mainly the second-rate Episode I stuff, with the occasional glimpse of 'real' Star Wars - we saw the Millennium Falcon zoom past at the start of a multiplayer battle."

New Resident Evil: Code Veronica Screens and Movies! - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 1:15 AM, EDT
Resident Evil has never looked better!! This game is looking awesome:

Capcom Entertainment has finally announced the new "enhanced" version of Resident Evil: Code Veronica to PlayStation 2. The developers behind Code Veronica are taking full advantage of this added level of emotion, and you can expect to see a great deal more in the way of in-game movies to help establish characters and carry the story. In the opening area of the game alone, we were treated to a new cutscene every 5-10 minutes and considering this game is roughly two times the size of the considerably huge RE3, this pace will result in a hefty amount of nail-biting story elements.

Core posted first impressions of Capcom’s horror game, Devil May Cry:

Another aspect we were pleased with is Devil May Cry's background music and sound effects. The music changes according to what room you're in and ranges from "absence of evil" choruses to fast techno-style beats during combat to get the adrenaline pumping. Capcom's horror titles have usually featured excellent musical scores, and Devil May Cry looks to be no exception.

Capcom has seemingly taken a long list of grievances associated with its other 3D action/adventure titles and promptly fixed them in Devil May Cry -- everything from transitions and full analog stick support to control schemes and basic visual splendor. While not everything is pristine here, DMC is an extremely promising title that looks to push the envelope on the PlayStation 2 and serve up a spooky gameplay experience.

Gamespot smacked up first impressions of Konami’s platformer, Klonoa 2:
Visually, Klonoa 2 is something else. The game's more impressive than the original was in its time, mostly due to the sheer size and intricacy of the environments. The character models boast a light cel-shading effect, though we've heard that Namco's actual technique isn't what is traditionally employed. The effect is the same, however, and the characters look marvelously hand-drawn and animate. The stages are replete with all kinds of subtle and well-executed lighting effects, which work to offset whatever negative effects their polygonal simplicity may have imposed. And since the game is, essentially, fully rendered in 3D, you can see much of what is going on in areas beyond the one you currently inhabit.

NBA Shootout 2001 review - Comments (0)

We added a review of 989 Sport’s basketball game.
A slice:

Another example that 989 didn’t get the memo on play testing their games, is the camera work. One of the game designers decided that a typical camera was not suited to show off their handiwork, so they went in a new direction. “Worthless Cam” is what I presume that it’s called, but I didn’t find anything in the press release touting this feature, so we’ll just assume that’s what it is called. After your opponent has blown by your defense for an easy dunk (more often than you’d hope) the camera shifts to the baseline to give you a “better” look of the floor. The only thing this view does is show you what your center is doing down on the other end of the floor, so unless you are going for a Hill to Laettner bomb, this view does little to help.

DailyRadar posted an interview with Bullfrog's Executive Producer David Ratcliff about the PS2 version of Quake 3.
A slice:

Q: What makes Quake different than other PS2 shooters like Time Splitters and Unreal?

A: Because quite simply Quake is the best first-person shooter, and we believe we've produced the best version for any console. We have all the brilliant architecture from the PC version, great gameplay, ultra smooth frame rates, incredible sound, we've added even more game modes into the game and some all new levels. The result is brilliant conversion of an all-time classic game.

Q: What was the hardest thing to do when you made the game?

A: Getting a game that pushes even a high-end PC into the memory footprint of the PS2, especially trying to maintain all the detail and texture resolution at a high fps.

Here’s a bit:

For the most part you'll be running around from location to location on the map screen, watching brief sections of the movie and listening to what people have to say. Despite this being an "interactive" movie, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of interaction available. For example, in most situations there is only two things that you can do, use an item or run away. You don't have a large list of choices for what to do or what to say, in fact you can never choose dialog which is a shame because that would have added a lot to the experience.

Test Drive game for PS2 - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:52 PM, EST
Infogrames announced today that its top-selling racing franchise, the Test Drive series, is coming to the PS2 with Test Drive.
A bit of the press release:

"The new Test Drive has everything necessary to be the best racing game ever," said Laddie Ervin, director of marketing for sports and racing at Infogrames' San Jose Label. "With superior technology, lightning quick racing action and the stunningly realistic graphics, it's going to blow the competition away this Fall."

With a brand new, built-from-scratch graphics engine designed to take advantage of the PlayStation2 technology, the game will utilize numerous cutting edge graphics techniques that maximize visual realism. Some of the techniques utilized in the game include anti-aliasing, mip-mapping, real-time lighting and multi-level reflection mapping. With these technologies implemented, players will experience real-time shadows and lighting on cars, throughout the game's environments, including on cars and people.

To accomplish the feel of a crowded and realistically interactive environment in
Test Drive, the artificial intelligence (AI) editor in the game has been designed to orchestrate street intersections and vehicle responses in complex ways. For example, vehicle traffic and pedestrians will respond appropriately to traffic signals changing from green to red. People will jump out of the way of cars as they come closer and city traffic and other moving vehicles will be choreographed to create mayhem heightening gameplay.
The game will be available Fall 2001.

First off, this is not the emulation that you put on your computer. If you thought Sony was going to drop to Bleem's level, then don't read on... If you know what I'm talking about then read on.

I thought you soccer fans might like this...

We've just received a Japanese preview version of Winning Eleven 5, the game which (with a few improvements no doubt) will be released as ISS Pro Evolution 2 for the PS2 towards the end of this year. At the time of writing we've only managed to squeeze in a few matches and decipher about half of the menu screens but it's already clear that FIFA has some serious competition. The gameplay is almost identical to that of ISS Pro Evolution 2 on the PSone, although even faster and smoother, and the quality of the visuals and animation, even at this early stage, is pretty much on a par with FIFA 2001.

You wanted to feel that intensity that was found in the ending of each Star Wars movie? This is where you can get some heavy doses. The final battle takes a page from Episode I as your fleet must attack a Trade Federation command post. All sorts of action going on around you as you take on waves of enemies and try to infiltrate the station. Very nicely done indeed.

C&VG posted an interview with Snowblind about its RPG, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance:

CVG: We've heard of the usual comparisons with Diablo. What are the key differences and the key similarities as far as you are concerned?

Ezra Dreisbach: "Hopefully our game will be as fun as Diablo. One difference is that our game is a console game. The consoles have been under-served in regard to this type of game. Our game is 3D, which makes the animation smoother and more dynamic. Another key difference is that our game takes place in the Forgotten Realms using the 3rd Edition D&D rules. Perhaps the most significant difference is that we hope to include more traditional platformer gameplay elements such as jumping, blocking, lever pulling, and item pushing.
"The similarities are hopefully all the things that make Diablo such a fun game. The player spends most of their gameplay time having fun, the interface is simple and easy to use, and the game is pretty much constant action."

"RPGs, more than any other genre, are about the culmination of individual elements to form a lasting experience. Graphics, be it art design, effects, or various other subtleties, enhance the story so much as they push it along."

The sequel to Evergrace is heading to the PS2 with new features and enhanced graphics...check out this tasty preview:

The character models should be improved along with all other aspects of the game's graphics. The first screenshots display far sharper and more detailed textures, including some very pretty reflections in polished floors. Evergrace 2 won't lack for impressive monsters to battle, it seems -- I particularly like the giant chimaera, whose fire breath illuminates the room around him. Hopefully, the framerate problems that were bothersome in the original Evergrace (particularly some bad spots of slowdown when you used projectile weapons) will be neatly tidied up in the sequel.

The most intriguing aspect of the battlegrounds is that they feature traffic, ever-changing weather conditions, living pedestrians and interactive objects that make for a highly charged, living world of destruction. The weather conditions in particular are quite cool and add a lot of realism to the general look and feel of the game.

In addition to the eight single player levels, the game will have 10 levels designed specifically for multiplayer deathmatches. The gameplay modes include the following: Pure Death Mode, Endurance Mode and Co-op Mode.

EA announces Medal of Honor: Fighter Command - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 7:32 PM, EST
Thats right, EA announces to Medal of Honor games for the PS2:

According to the developers, the missions are anything but straightforward. Players have to engage in the mission, complete it, and get back out of the area. "You have to make decisions about fuel and damage--you have choices in specific situations like going back to your carrier, jumping out of the plane, or going for a land base--and each decision has its own consequences," a member of the development team told GameSpot. "You have to constantly be thinking about what you do with your machine. If you end up in the water, depending on the decisions you made up to that point, you will be faced with different situations. For example, if you go down in a remote area, you may never be rescued. The single-player campaign has a very specific story. The idea is that we want to use the best aircraft that are suited specifically for each mission--we want to choose aircraft that we can create missions around."

We posted a review of EA’s basketball game:

While the players may not always be picture perfect, the moves they are performing almost always are. There is an enormous amount of animation for just about any play you can imagine. From a one handed leaner to a one handed dunk with the opposite hand, a variety of moves are present to keep the game from becoming repetitive. After completing a highlight move, the camera will show a replay or a close up shot of the player telling the world how great he is. Other than the one weird player quirk, the graphics are top-notch, and a huge improvement over the PS2’s other Basketball titles.

Driving Emotion Type-S review - Comments (6)
Posted by @ 1:50 PM, EST
We also added a review of Square’s racer:

The AI opponents are very intelligent. This isn't seen in too many racing games but in Type-S your competition will follow proper racing lines, take turns at appropriate speeds and are very much aware of your location on the track. Basically what this means is that you can't always cut a line through the pack as they will occasionally cut you off and get in your way. Want to take the inside line? You'd better think twice because they also want to take it so don't get too cocky! If you want to drive like a maniac, you'll crash and burn fast. Another enjoyable aspect of the game is the need for awareness throughout the race of where the other cars are and knowing when to make your move.

Final Fantasy X Interview... - Comments (1)
Posted by @ 10:10 PM, EST
This was rather interesting, it went into many topics. Some of which include, dialogue in the game, the 3D world, and details about the battle system. You should check it out.

Nojima-san: One of the main themes is travel. We want players to completely explore the world, and we wanted to create something that loosely resembled contemporary life, but was also entirely unique. Final Fantasy X has a strong Asian influence also because all the previous titles in the series have been more European styled. The world looks vaguely similar to some places in Southeast Asia because that's the style we were going after. Particularly the way Western culture and Asian architecture are juxtaposed.
Now, travel has been very much used in the VII, VIII, and IX, but it's going to be a main focus, so that can only mean BIG worlds. Well, that's my insight.

Knockout Kings 2001 review - Comments (0)

We smacked up a review of EA’s boxer:

I firmly believe that KO Kings 2001 has one of, if not the best boxing fighting system ever in a videogame! Every button on the DS2 controller is put to excellent use and because of the controllers many buttons, EA Sports was able to add an incredible amount of variety of punches and moves. For the sake of keeping this review to an acceptable length I won't bother getting into explaining all of the button's functions but I'll just go on record to say that the interface is absolutely superb. There are almost a limitless number of combos that you can perform. For the most part you feel very much in control of your boxer. However sometimes there is a slight delay in reaction to the button inputs but this is just a very minor problem, which doesn't affect the gameplay hardly at all.

Even the arenas aren’t safe from the ugliness of this game. Sure they have championship banners hanging in the rafters, but what gives with the “Rafter-cam” that pops up during breaks in the action? The camera shows a mind numbingly bad shot of the roof of the building, and I’m not talking the championship banners here, I mean the top of the scoreboard and the actual ceiling. It’s bizarre, ugly, and to be honest it scares me.

Famitsu posted an interview with the producer and staff of Z.O.E.:

F: You mean to say the game's enjoyment doesn't come from piloting a robot, but that the robot animation story and style of this game is the main thing?

Kojima: Z.O.E. is a game. We believe action games are the best kind of titles for interactive gaming. Players can control these huge machines, something that they will never experience in real life; that's where the excitement comes from. Action games allow players to really have this kind of experience. As they are experiencing this, many players will feel very at home and comfortable with it, like some kind of "Animation deja vu." Becoming a central character in an animated story, and even recall scenes of movies from the good old days...

DR: The single-player campaign, being able to build your character up in the single-player game, play your enhanced character in multiplayer, ability to leave your single-player character as a bot on a friend's PS2 for them to kick the *! out of you.

We've also added to the PC storyline, you learn that you are trapped for eternity by the Vadrigar and the only way to escape is to battle through all the Arenas and eventually duel with the Vadrigar and hopefully win your freedom.

In addition there are five new levels, new game modes including Possession, in which you have to keep hold of the flag for a certain amount of time whilst the bots do their damned best to frag you, Team Arena levels, Team Arena weapons... do you want me to carry on?

Senasaura hooks up with PS2. - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 2:13 PM, EST
Gameweek has announced that Senasaura will help with the ps2's audio side:

"Audio technology company Sensaura has announced that it's providing middleware tools to PlayStation 2 developers. The utility, Sensaura 3-D Positional Audio, is available for developers who want to add elaborate sound effects to their game products, including the ability to “place” sounds around the player through Sensaura’s advanced audio algorithms.
The process—while already available to computer-game developers for some time—builds up the realism of a game product, through the enlarged “soundscape” that the technology creates. Rather than being limited to sounds “in front” of the player, 3-D positional audio enables the developer to make it appear that a sound is coming from the side or above a player in a more realistic manner.
United Kingdom-based Sensaura stated that the software will also provide other special effects, such as EnvironmentFX for 3-D reverb, ZoomFX and MacroFX. The bundle will be distributed by Criterion Software."

FF: The Spirits Within, First impressions. - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 11:47 AM, EST
Columbia Pictures showed a 17-minute sneak preview of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, one of the most awesome movies everyone has been waiting for:

"As the preview starts, the first thing that strikes you is how realistic everything looks. Every detail imaginable seems to have carefully been implemented into each and every model that is being used in the movie, from tracks in the sand and cracked building walls to freckles on a character's face. A good example of this in the preview is when one of the characters, Neil, takes his military helmet off. As it is being taken off, you can see the shadow of the helmet on his face and even darker shadows on the wrinkles on his face. Another example that demonstrates the extreme detail in the film's visuals is a scene where Aki is having a dream. The scene starts with the camera far above the ground, where you can see the aliens running toward Aki from a great distance. As they are running toward her, they are shooting large balls of fire across the sky. What is most impressive in this scene is that you can see color variations in the fireballs and very realistic looking smoke trails being left behind."

Shadow of Destiny reviewed. - Comments (0)

A game that got no hype, turns out to be one of the best adventure games for the PS2:

Good adventure games on consoles have been few and far between. Konami's Shadow of Destiny is a welcome addition to the sparse number of good adventure games, a time-traveling adventure that starts with the player dying at the start of nearly every level, or chapter. The Player's job is to go back in time -- sometimes just a few hours and sometimes a few centuries -- to figure out how to prevent their own death. Changes made in the past effect the present, and that's part of what makes this game so good.

Z.O.E. Import Preview - Comments (0)

Ign has got their hands on an import version of one of the most anticipated games for the PS2, Z.O.E., sadly its in japanese:

"Oh, well. I'll keep the redneck katana sharp for when I can speak with authority, and turn instead to what makes me happy about Z.O.E, which is almost everything (except for the fact that I can hardly understand any of it yet). Its storytelling is powerful, to begin with. After the intro movie, which compiles game sequences together into a montage accompanied by beautiful theme music, the cinematics proper begin. The chaos of the colony jack is presented halfway in flashback, as Leo flees the battle while remembering the death of his friends. The scale of the orbital frames in these scenes is awesome, as they tower over humans as proper giant robots should. Then, he stumbles upon the Jehuty frame, and the story you may have seen some of in our demo movies begins."

Here is a first look at Konami's upcoming RPG with 2 screens and a movie included:

"The Goemon series has long been popular on the N64 and PSX. The latest PS2 version is much like its predecessors; the player pilots little Goemon in the third person through the towns and countryside of medieval Japan fighting monsters and finishing quests. The graphics are bright and cheery, and the characters and enemies very cartoony. As mentioned, the game play is very derivative of Mario 64 (some of the enemies even look suspiciously like Mario's adversaries) but the Edo Japan setting gives the game its own atmosphere."

However, our spies took the red pill, and reliably inform us that the game will be based on the first movie, not the in-development sequel as many previously thought. More interestingly, elements from the second film will find there way into the title, acting as some kind of prequel element..

Posted by @ 12:26 AM, EST
IGN posted 25 new hi-res screens and 11 new awesome movies for your enjoyment. They show how sick and twisted the guys at IGN can be by shooting enemy soldiers in weird ways, such as shooting them in their sleep and knocking 'em down by shooting them in the crotch.

There's just so much that can be done in the game and since other sites have beaten us to the punch with putting up regular screenshots and movies of gameplay from the demo, we've decided to do our first major media update for the game with a specific angle. For this reason, today's batch of images and videos will focus on crotch shots.
These movies aren't for the faint hearted...

The campaign's application page, available in both English and Japanese, offers gamers the chance to enter their name, date of birth, blood type, and nationality. All the names gathered will then be reviewed by the development team, who will ultimately select a few for use in the game as enemy soldiers. The names and personal information will appear in game, inscribed on the dogtags worn by the soldiers.

So stop wasting time, register for a chance to have your name in probably the most anticipated PS2 game. Other than FFX that is of course...

Rayman 2 Revolution review - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:50 PM, EST
We added a review of Ubi Soft’s adventure game Rayman 2 Revolution:

Gameplay is also as equally impressive as the visuals. Control of Rayman is simple and effortless. Rayman simply walks, runs, jumps, swings, climbs, flies and shoots. Throughout his adventure, Rayman has to collect items and exchange them for power-ups. These range from new shooting abilities to new maneuvers. The creatively designed levels contain a well balanced mix of action, puzzles, exploration and mini-games. There are also a plethora of secrets to uncover spread throughout the game that will keep you playing for days on end.

DailyRadar posted first impressions (along with movies and screens) of the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo:

The actual demo plays a great deal like the original Metal Gear Solid, but with much more accuracy to the analog movement and some great new moves. Not only can you stuff baddies in closets and drag them around by either their heads or feet, you can take them to the side of the ship and throw them overboard. That's as good a way as any to make sure a drugged enemy doesn't wake up.

Gamespot posted first impressions of the PS2 version of id’s Quake 3 Arena:
The PS2 makes the textures and environments in Quake III look better than they ever have. The game features updated versions of all the maps found in the PC version of the game, and it even has several exclusive new maps designed specifically for the PS2 version. All the PC maps have received a major face-lift. Some maps have been modified to appeal to a smaller number of players, but most of the maps have simply received a graphical overhaul. New textures and lighting effects make the castle and interior maps look a lot better, and new backgrounds and ambient details make the outdoor and space maps look simply incredible. Some of the best examples of the graphical enhancements to the maps in the Quake III Revolution are the effects added to CTF4, the capture the flag map set in space. The PC version of the map took place in the black void of space, but the PS2 version is set just outside the orbits of several amazingly beautiful planets-- it has solar gasses, and it even features an asteroid belt.

GamingAge smacked up a review of Lightweight’s samurai fighter, Kengo- Master of Bushido:
Gameplay has been the primary subject of most of the game's debates and reviews. I found the game to not only control rather well, but I kind of dug the changes made from other Bushido games. The biggest nuisance is the life bars, but that can always be fixed in a sequel. I'd love to say that the game offered many unique fighting styles, but I can't and won't. Most of the fighters not only look similar, but fight similar as well. This takes the game away from greatness, but the game in my opinion is still good.

Extermination preview - Comments (0)
Posted by @ 3:35 PM, EST
ign has released 30 new hi-res screens as well as a 1 minute long MPG movie of SCEI's upcoming ps2 title, lets take a look:

"Panic action lives - yes, Deep Space's Extermination has come back out in the light thanks to new information released by Sony in Japan. For some reason, though, the giant swarms of bugs have taken something a back seat. The setting now seems to be a little more conventional, although hideous things no doubt lurk out there in the darkness to consume the game's heroes yet. In any event, Sony seems less interested in talking about details of plot than getting across Extermination's central gameplay innovation, the introduction of fast action to a game that's otherwise structured like Resident Evil and other third-person adventure games. As they put it, it is not an adventure game - the player should feel like they're on the stage of an action movie."
